Gabriele Bonomelli is postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of History of the University of Warsaw.

He obtained his PhD in Medieval history at the University of Bologna in 2022. He was visiting scholar in Wuppertal with a DAAD Fellowship (2020) and in London with a “Marco Polo” Fellowship (2021). From 2023 to 2025 he was employed as postdoctoral researcher at the University of Kent (“Newton International Fellow”) with the research project “Dynamics of conflict. Original perspectives on religious turmoil in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe (1378-1603)”.

His research interests revolve around the political and institutional history of the High and Late Middle Ages, especially related to Church History in the Mediterranean area.

He was awarded the “SISMED Prize” for the publication of a monograph (2025) which will be edited by Viella in 2026: Vicarius Christi, vicarius Dei. Apogeo e tramonto della sovranità papale attraverso le epistole fittizie (1307-1409), with the editor Viella. He has published several essays in international journals (see for the full list https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8369-0099).

Within the RECOGNISING-SAINTS project he is focusing on the process of saint recognition in the Mediterranean area, both from the Roman as well as the local perspective, with particular attention to those cases in which this mechanism fostered dissent against the authority of the pope.
